Women have been leading winemaking in our country for centuries! The first reported female winemaker in California was Hannah Weinberger, who took over winemaking duties at the Weinberger winery in Napa when her husband passed away in 1882. She ran it until Prohibition closed the estate’s doors in 1920. Also of note was Josephine Tychson of Freemark Abbey. Undeterred by her husband’s death in 1886, she finished building the winery and ran it until 1894. In 1965, Mary Ann Graf, who went on to become winemaker at Simi, was the first woman to graduate with a degree in oenology from U.C. Davis.
These are just a few examples of the women who laid the groundwork for today’s generation of high-end winemakers, like the mother-daughter duo at Dalle Valle.
Dalle Valle was founded by Naoko and the late Gustav Dalla Valle in 1986. The estate (still family-run to this day) focuses on Cabernet and Bordeaux blends from the 20-acre estate vineyard in Oakville. The precision and complexity of these wines continue to wow critics even 35 years later!
After her husband’s passing, Naoko continued to lead the estate towards greatness. Her focus remains on the vineyard and grape growing. Recently, the estate started a new chapter as daughter Maya (of the namesake wine) took over as head winemaker and director. With training at Ornellaia, Masseto, Petrus, and Chateau Latour, Maya is uniquely qualified to continue the work of her parents. Naoko says it was always a dream to have her daughter join, much like the multi-generational estates often found in Europe. The two of them work in sync to continue the vision of First Growth Napa wines.
