Mark Aubert’s resume is like a red carpet of California wine: he’s worked at Peter Michael, Colgin, Bryant Family, and Sloan. But although he spent a lot of time deep into Cabernet, it’s Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that really captured his imagination. When it was time to branch out on his own, he headed to the cool Sonoma Coast, where growing conditions are ideal for Burgundy varieties.
His CIX Vineyard is predominately planted with Chardonnay (Pinot making up the balance). He goes for what he describes as a “hedonistic” style of Chardonnay: barrel fermented and aged with ripe fruit flavors and a full, round body. Yet it’s still incredibly elegant and in the tradition of great Burgundies, meant to age. You’d better believe this MAGNUM is ideal for that long evolution!
Then there’s that FULL CASE of Rombauer! The estate’s oft-copied style set a precedence for California Chardonnay. Think plush, think opulent! Rombauer also helped many of California’s now-top estates get their start.
