Penfolds’ winemaker Max Schubert was enamored with the wines of Bordeaux and had a hunch that Australia could produce wines of equal quality — but with its signature grape Shiraz. Well, his first vintage didn’t go over well, but he quietly kept experimenting in the cellar. Close studies of Barossa terroir were conducted, and he even went to Bordeaux to learn more about their aging techniques.
A few years later he presented his new-and-improved Grange, and it received near-perfect ratings. Its upward trajectory continued from there: the 1990 vintage was named Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator and in 2001 it became recognized as a South Australian heritage icon.
