Building upon the work of Sassicaia, Ornellaia was one of the first estates in Bolgheri to turn away from Sangiovese and focus its attention on Bordeaux varieties. The unique climate of this oceanside region was a perfect fit for Cabernet, Merlot, and others.
These wines soon caught the attention of the world (even though locals had a hard time getting their heads around non-indigenous grapes) but high scores from critics soon convinced even the loudest naysayers that this was what Bolgheri was meant to do!
