Mark Aubert is a pioneer of Sonoma Coast wines: he was one of the first to venture out to this wild territory and plant vineyards. Realizing he had some primo land at his fingertips, he began to think of his sites as Grand Cru vineyards and paid careful attention to the nuances of each.
Don’t think he was going about this blindly, however: before establishing his own label with his wife Teresa in 1999, Aubert worked at Peter Michael (learning from superstar winemaker Helen Turley), followed by stints at Colgin, Sloan, Futo, and Bryant Family. I think he had a few tricks up his sleeve.
Seemingly overnight, the estate garnered acclaim and today Aubert’s bottlings are highly prized and highly allocated (meaning it’s nearly impossible to get your hands on them).
Reuling Vineyard was planted by Aubert and the Peter Michael winery in 2000. There are only about 12 acres of Pinot, so very little wine is able to be made. What makes the site really unique are the clones planted in the vineyard: two out of the three are “suitcase” clones brought back from Vosne-Romanée in Burgundy. Highly perfumed and elegant, this is standout Pinot!
